The Ryder Cup, one of the most prestigious golfing events in the world could be about to change. The team event offers no direct monetary prize for winning. For this competition is about more than money. It is the chance to represent Europe or America motivated by national pride.
The Ryder Cup is another feather in the cap for its stars who can earn millions through sponsorship deals. Being part of this competition adds to their marketability and appeal, and offers a chance to grow one’s brand.
At the Ryder Cup in Rome last year, Patrick Cantlay was jeered and vilified by the European fans for believing that players should be paid to participate in the tournament.
It is now believed that the USA Ryder Cup Team in 2025 will be paid £4 million collectively for their showdown in New York. There are no signs that the European Team will be following in their footsteps.
At an amateur level when you take to the course on a Saturday afternoon, you may have a small wager amongst your four-ball, but you are playing for the love of the game.
