Picking the right type of golf tee for not only the club you use, but also the type of swing you have is therefore essential.
Plastic or Wooden?
There are other materials like bamboo, rubber and even metal but generally golf tees are either wooden or plastic. The preference for plastic or wooden golf tees is really a personal choice. Plastic tees by their nature will last longer, will be less likely to snap, but by definition are single use plastics and generally worse for the environment. Wooden golf tees are biodegradable, more tactile and tend to be used by tour players and better golfers.
Standard or Castle tees?
Again, generalising somewhat but golf tees either come in a regular form (right) or a stepped version (left) normally referred to as a ‘castle tee’ See below:
Standard golf tees
Standard type golf tees come in a variety of heights.
The most common golf tee lengths are: 42mm, 54mm,70mm, and 83mm. However the 2 main sizes used are 42mm and 70mm. Golf Badger offers both these heights with the 70mm coming in either the regular golf tee type or the castle tee.
Castle tee
The use of castle tees has become more popular in recent years. Indeed they are now often used by tour players. Golf Badger offers a 70mm version suitable for use with Drivers.
What height golf tee should I use?
Generally speaking longer tees are used with Drivers and shorter tees are used with irons and hybrids. The reason for this is that the driver head is usually larger and taller than the head of an iron necessitating a higher tee position. Nowadays most modern golfers would use a 460cc driver. The term 460cc actually describes the volume of the club head in cubic centimeters and this is the maximum volume allowed for golf club heads according to the USGA.
Normal tee height when using a driver?
As a rule of thumb a normal/standard tee height position for a ball would be one that sees the top of the club head cut through half of the ball. To explain this another way when you place the driver head next to the ball, the top of the driver head should be level with the equator of the ball. This is really why the 70mm tee is such a popular choice and why tee height has increased over the years with the evolution of driver head size. Also the way in which you hit a driver is to hit up on the ball like a rocket launcher and you need sufficient clearance from the ground to achieve this!
The beauty of using the castle tee is that every single time you tee your ball up you know it will be at the same height. There are not many things you can control on a tee box, but the height of your tee is certainly one hence the popularity of this type of tee. Over time, with swing memory being an important factor in ball striking having a consistent height will ultimately result in more consistent strike with your driver.
Tee it up or tee it down?
Where the castle tee lets itself down by its nature it is not adjustable. So, there maybe situations where a golfer will want to change the height of his tee. Without going into too much detail, a higher tee results in higher ball flight. This might be useful if you have a tail wind and want to get those extra few yards of distance. A standard golf tee allows you to tee the ball higher or lower by adjusting how far you push it into the ground. At times, even with a driver you might prefer a lower ball position on the club face, teeing lower generally means a lower ball flight, and a low tee position would be one where the center of the ball is nearer the bottom half of the club face. This maybe useful when playing into a headwind.
Shorter tees…
